HEMS Inc. is a federally-recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization made up of stakeholders in the Southeastern Michigan Emergency Medical Service community. Working together, hospitals, local and county government, EMS services, education and industry have created a world-class emergency care system for the citizens of western and downriver Wayne County. HEMS was established in 1980, and is delegated certain functions, authority and responsibility by the Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services as a Medical Control Authority. HEMS also operates one of Michigan's busiest staffed EMS communications systems linking over 50 EMS services to fourteen hospitals, and providing an infrastructure for disaster communication and resource coordination. HEMS is proud to sponsor the MI-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT), which provides specialized medical support in disasters and other major events. HEMS is also a key sponsor of the Region 2 South Bioterrorism Preparedness effort, helping to assure the safety of our citizens.

HEMS Medical Director Dr. Mark Bacigal (right) and Alternate Medical Director Dr. Thomas McKeowne (left) work together at a meeting of the HEMS Medical Control Advisory Board.
Emergency physicians, nurses, pharmacists and all types of EMS providers work together to craft a system of superior care for our patients. MCAB meetings are now held in the HEMS conference room at the Wayne County Health Administration Building.
HEMS Radio operators provide 24  hour monitoring, recording and communications patch capability between 16 hospitals and over 50 life support agencies using VHF, UHF and 800 MHz radio networks. Click here to see our other services.
